Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she realized that this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
